If you’ve ever run wood ovens or high-temp curing lines, you know the struggle. The goal is to get your product hot, but you usually end up heating the entire building by mistake. Standard convection heating just pumps hot air everywhere. By July, your production floor feels like a steam room, and your crew is miserable. That’s why we use directional infrared (IR).
How it actually works
Think of it less like a space heater and more like a flashlight. Instead of warming up the air around it, IR sends energy in a straight line. It doesn’t actually turn into heat until it hits something solid. So, when you aim that energy directly into the oven chamber, the air in your shop stays cool. Your HVAC system gets a break, and you stop paying to heat the ceiling.
Picking the right gear
If you’re looking for a replacement, don’t just grab the first lamp you see. You have to match your voltage and wattage exactly. If you go too high, you’re looking at fried sockets and a lot of downtime. I always recommend short-wave IR for this stuff. It sinks deeper into the material and hits its target instantly. There’s no “warm-up” period. You flip the switch, and it’s hot. Just like that.
The dirty truth about installation
Most of these units use R7s or Sk15 connectors, which makes swapping them out a breeze. But here is the catch: these lamps pack a massive amount of energy into a tiny space. If your reflectors are dirty or pitted, that beam starts to scatter. When the beam scatters, two bad things happen. You get “hot spots” on your product, and that heat starts leaking back into your workspace. Keep those reflectors polished. It takes a minute, but it keeps the heat exactly where it belongs.
