
Stop Fighting Bathroom Mold With a Scrub Brush
Most people think those bathroom heat lamps are just there to keep you from shivering when you step out of the shower. But there’s a lot more going on under the hood. We actually build these things to tackle a much bigger enemy: mold. Instead of just warming up the air, these lamps use specific infrared wavelengths. They go after the moisture hiding in your grout and silicone—the stuff that usually stays damp for hours—and dry it out from the inside.
How it actually works
We use something called short-wave infrared (SWIR). Most heaters just push warm air around the room, but SWIR is different. It sinks deep into those porous surfaces. It basically shakes up the water molecules until they evaporate. When you get the surface dry enough, mold simply can’t grow. It’s not magic; it’s just science used to keep your bathroom from turning into a swamp.
The nitty-gritty on the gear
To get this kind of heat, we use high-purity quartz tubes. We use the good stuff so the glass doesn’t cloud over or crack when it heats up and cools down a dozen times a day. Fair warning: these things gethot. Really hot. Because the heat density is so high, you’ve got to make sure your ceiling fixtures can handle it without scorching. And please, run your exhaust fan at the same time. The lamp pushes the moisture out of the walls, but the fan is what actually kicks it out of the house.
A few things to keep in mind
Installing these is pretty simple, but they do pull a decent amount of power. Before you go crazy and put five of them in one room, double-check your breaker. You don’t want to trip the power every time you take a bath. Also, those halogen elements are bright. Like, “blinding you at 6 AM” bright. To fix that, we usually suggest using dimmers or timers. That way, you can keep the room dry and mold-free without feeling like you’re standing under a stadium spotlight. At the end of the day, this isn’t about luxury—it’s about making sure your bathroom stays clean.
