
Why we put our heaters through a “steam torture test”
When we build infrared heating lamps for bathrooms, we know exactly what they’re up against. Steam. Constant humidity. The kind of dampness that finds its way into every tiny crack. You’ll see an “IP65” rating on the box, which basically means the housing keeps out dust and can handle a splash of water. But honestly? A rating on a piece of paper isn’t enough. Steam is sneaky. It doesn’t just sit there; it pushes through seals over time. That’s why we don’t just trust the rating. We put every single batch through a damp-heat aging test.
The battle against the steam
Think about a typical bathroom. One minute it’s freezing, the next it’s a sauna. That constant switching between hot and cold makes materials expand and shrink. It’s like the heater is breathing. To mimic this, we lock our units in chambers with 95% humidity and crank up the heat for hundreds of hours. We’re hunting for the breaking point. If a gasket shrinks even a tiny bit, or the glue gives way, moisture gets inside. Once that vapor hits the wiring, you get oxidation. In the real world, that’s how you end up with a dead lamp or a short circuit right when you actually need the heat.
Finding the failures before you do
We don’t just flip a switch and say, “Yep, it’s still on.” That’s too easy. We dig deeper. We track the insulation resistance to see if the leakage current spikes after the unit has been soaked for 72 hours. If the numbers drift, the seal failed. Period. We also look for “clouding” on the quartz glass. If the housing leaks, condensation builds up inside the lamp. Then, the moment you turn the heater on, that moisture causes a thermal shock.**Crack.**The glass breaks. We’d rather find that out in our lab than have it happen in your bathroom.
The trade-offs we make
Here’s the thing: making a seal tight enough to survive this is actually a bit of a headache. When the heater runs, it builds up internal pressure. If the housing is too flimsy, it’ll warp. To stop that, we use reinforced polymers and high-grade silicone. It makes the unit a bit heavier, sure. But it means your heater won’t give up the ghost after six months of showers. It’s the difference between a product that looks good on a spec sheet and one that actually works without tripping your breaker the second you turn on the water.
