
Stop the Shivers: How to Actually Warm Up a Changing Room
Let’s be honest: there is nothing worse than stepping out of a hot shower into a freezing cold changing room. Standard heaters just don’t cut it here. They try to warm the air, but in an open room, that heat just floats straight up to the ceiling while you’re left shivering. To get that “luxury hotel” feeling where you feel warm the second you step outside, we use shortwave infrared (IR). Think of it like the sun. IR doesn’t bother warming up the air around you; it beams the heat directly onto your skin. It’s instant.
How the magic happens
Inside these units, there’s a tungsten filament tucked into a quartz tube. When it kicks on, it sends out shortwave radiation that sinks right into your skin. It’s the fastest way to kill that bone-deep chill you get in a drafty locker room. No waiting for the room to “warm up.” You just feel it immediately.
The nitty-gritty on the hardware
We use quartz glass because it can handle being turned on and off rapidly without cracking. To make sure the heat actually hits the person and not the wall, we use polished aluminum or gold-coated reflectors to aim the beam downward. One heads-up on the electrics: these units pull a decent amount of power. If you’re lining up a few of them in a row, make sure your circuit breaker can handle the load. You don’t want the power cutting out right during the morning rush.
Real-world installation
Water and electricity are a terrible mix, so we keep everything sealed up in IP-rated housings to keep moisture out. We mount them on the walls to keep the floors clear and easy to clean. But here is the catch: IR has a limited reach. If you mount the heater too high, the heat vanishes before it reaches the user. You have to put them exactly where people actually stand. If you miss the mark by a few feet, you’re basically just paying to heat the ceiling.
